This translation project is the except of The Great Alone,a novel written by a contemporary American best-selling novelist Kristin Hannah whose writing style emphasizes family affection and family values. The book was published by Saint Martin press in February 2018,and there is no Chinese version yet.Set in the 1970 s,the story mainly tells that a family of three who went to Alaska in search of a new beginning in the isolated wilderness, after experiencing the struggle for survival, love and loss, understood the true meaning of life. This translation project covers a total amount of about 11000 words, which is selected from Chapter One to Chapter Three. The target readers are Chinese readers who are interested in western literature and domestic scholars. This practice ensures that the translated text is faithful to the original text,so that it can be readable and meet the reading habits and needs of Chinese readers.Because of the differences between English and Chinese,it's a great challenge to retain the original writing style, characterization and scenery description. For this reason, the translator first collects the background information and establishes the purpose and significance of the task. Then the translator analyzes the text features and writing style, and queries the relevant information in the text.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory, lexical, syntactic and rhetorical equivalence can be achieved through translation methods such as part-of-speech conversion, addition, free translation, syntactic linearity and reverse translation.Through this translation practice, the translator has a deeper understanding of how to use functional equivalence theory to guide novel translation.Guiding practice with correct theories is critical to the quality of the translated text.In literary translation, the original style should be retained as much as possible and the target readers should be given the same feeling as the source language readers.
