Unsafe at Any Speed is a short story about mid-life crisis written by Laura Lee Smith, who is an American writer and novelist. The story is originally published in New England Review and selected by guest editor T.C.Boyle for inclusion in Best American Short Stories 2015.The report mainly focused on the problems that encountered in the translation process and their solutions. There are four parts in the report. The first chapter briefly introduces the story, the author and reasons for selecting the source text;the second chapter records the whole process of the translation, including pre-translation preparation, translation process, and revision after translation. The third chapter focuses on the problems encountered during the process of translation and their solutions. The fourth chapter briefly concludes the report and describes the author's feeling on the practice. In order to complete the translation well, the author analyzes Nida's functional equivalence theory and translates the story under the guidance of functional equivalence. So as to make the translation to achieve the maximal equivalence to the source text and give the target readers the similar feelings with the original readers, the author uses many concrete translation methods, such as literal translation, free translation, transliteration, combination, deletion and so on.But in the report, the author mainly explored the transliteration of names, the translation of car terms and abbreviations.Through this project, the author has learned how to apply the concrete translation methods to the translation in the specific situation and how to sort out problems and solve them. The author also has improved the ability of collecting information and making plans. Finally, the author hopes the practice can provide an excellent translation to readers who are interested in contemporary American literature.
