The Middle East,a well-located land full of energy and resources,is always the stage for major powers to perform on and the focus of research for people in various fields. The Iraq War in 2003 is one of the most significant geopolitical events since the 21st century, with countless studies taking the war and its aftermath as the theme. This translation project report is based on the author's practice of translation for Chapter 1 and Chapter 6 in the source text,The Iraq Effect:the Middle East after the Iraq War,It is a monograph released in 2010,which is written by USAP-sponsored RAND Corporation,a famous think tank in US.The translation of it provides a new aspect of view for the Middle East affair researchers in China, and the author has also made some improvement in his abilities to solve actual problems and carry out teamwork. This translation work is a group practice. The workgroup translates the main text of the monograph, and the author,as is said above,is responsible for Chapter 1 and Chapter 6.During the practice, the challenges to the author of this translation report involves the translation of professional terms and some special expressions, the treatment of long and difficult sentences and reproduction of style features of the source text.In order to cope with these difficulties, the author, under the basis of the overall grasp of its content and relevant background information of the source text, tries to choose the appropriate tools and acquire referential materials such as parallel text and background knowledge to ensure accurate understanding and translation.According to the features of style and language of this text, the author selects Vermeer's Skopos Theory as the guiding theory for the translation practice. With relevant cases of difficult points as examples, the translation report illustrates how the author applies the Skopos rule, the coherence rule and fidelity rule of this theory to the translation as well as how the author manages to achieve an ideal text translation by using translation strategies such as addition, conversion and omission in the translation. For the after-translation part of this project, the author mainly adopts self-examination,in-group inspection and supervisors' review to ensure the quality of translation. Those efforts reveal the mistakes made during the translation phase, which include typing error, text formation omission, misunderstanding of the source text, improper translation and so on.The author corrected those faults and thus had the quality of text translation assured. The author realizes through the translation practice that his background knowledge storage is not profound enough, and his proficiency in English and Chinese still need improving. The author's impatience and carelessness are sometimes shown in the quality assurance phase. In the following days of work and study, the author will strive to be a qualified and responsible translator by practicing more to improve his skills of translation as well as his proficiency in English and Chinese, developing a good attitude of patience and carefulness towards work and learning more background knowledge in various aspects.
