The translation material of this report is taken from a report of the Middle East and North Africa Programme at the European Council on Foreign Relations in November 2016.The report details the current complex situation caused by various parties in Syria and Iraq, and analyses the challenge there and its causes. In the latter part,it focuses on the development trend of the region in light of the influence of the international community and the Islamic sectarian groups of the region. From the perspective of the contents, the report Syria,Iraq and the Struggle for Power: Intertwined Futures mainly discusses the Middle East issue, which is a global hotspot nowadays.Located in the middle ground of Asia,Africa and Europe, the Middle East is the world's largest supplier of crude oil,and home to the world's three major religions. In that sense,it has always been the world's most tangled areas geopolitically and geo-economically throughout history.Considering the fact that China is vigorously promoting the Belt and Road initiative and the Chinese government has been working together with the Middle Eastern countries to jointly advance and realize mutual benefits and win-win achievements,China could make more comprehensive judgments with a better understanding of the geopolitical environment in the Middle East. From the perspective of the text type, this report is of informative texts, which are different from expressive texts or vocative texts, since it emphasizes the authenticity.During translation, the “authenticity first” principle should be given priority.Relying on the Skopos Theory, together with the Syria,Iraq and the Struggle for Power: Intertwined Futures English-Chinese translation, the author hopes to further explore the general translation skills of military texts and delve in the translation strategies of informative texts. The author always kept in mind the three rules of the Skopos Theory, namely the skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule dealing with the translation challenges, such as the vocabulary, long sentences and logics between passages. To better demonstrate that process, the author selected several typical examples below each translation challenge and did relevant analysis and summarization. In this way,the author summed up some useful methods and strategies. This report mainly includes six parts, namely introduction, project description,Skopos Theory, case analysis, conclusion and appendices.
