On Translating Long English Sentences Into Chinese

As a discipline introduced from the Western world,Psychology would not have developed so well in modern China without the translation of English psychological works.However,at a time when legal English translation and Business English translation are receiving much attention and been investigated repeatedly,the number of research on the translation of psychological works is in dire need of growth.Therefore,I believe that it is of great significance to study the translation of psychology.In this report,I conduct translation practice of Chapter 1 and Chapter 16 of Consciousness,Language,and Self:Psychoanalytic,Linguistic,and Anthropological Explorations of the Dual Nature of Mind,which is the latest work of Michael Robbins,a psychoanalyst and formerly professor of clinical psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and University of California San Francisco.In this work,he takes his current and former patients as research samples and explores the bilingual nature of human self from psychoanalytic,linguistic and anthropological perspectives.When I first read the book,I noticed abundant usages of English long,complex sentences.And it was a major challenge for me to translate these sentences into Chinese correctly and faithfully.As long English sentences usually consist of more than one subject-predicate structures and many modifiers(including attributives and adverbials),the translation of these sentences shall be accomplished through two major processes:comprehension and representation,with the application of several translation techniques.In reference to Liu Miqing,Lian Shuneng,Zhong Shukong,Zhang Peiji and other scholars' studies on translation techniques,I selected four of them:Subordination,Division,Metaphrasing and Reversing as the major techniques to be discussed in this report.
