Since 2017,major universities in China have successively established the program of master of translation and interpretation(MTI),which was designed to compensate for the shortage of highly skillful translation/interpretation practitioners in the translation market.According to some researches, although the MTI graduates from major universities have already had a certain level of translation proficiency and some work in the translation industry, but they still lack the qualities that are required for professional translators.Their weakness is not only reflected in the quality of their translation work, but also reflected in their professional habits and translation basics—two qualities that should be gained in the learning phase.Forming good professional habits and mastering the basics are in line with the purpose of establishing a style guide on the market today.Style guides,is a set of standards for the writing and design of documents, which provides guidance of language usage and standard conventions for the translators in localization field,as well as standards for writers and translators.Multinational corporations, international organizations and localization companies have applied style guides extensively, with the aim of promoting the standardization within their institutions and the overall quality of their products. The flexible use of style guides has become a basic requirement for localization practitioners in writing and translating. However,in the fields of traditional translation as well as translation training, the translators and educators/learners know little about the application of translation style guides, resulting in numerous cases of failing to follow the conventions and standards of translation and document creation—errors that can easily be avoided if these people realize the practicality of style guides. In this report, the author points out that the practice of using style guides adopted by localization companies is a good way in helping MTI students form good professional habits and mastering the basics of translation. Moreover, the framework in many style guides can be borrowed by educators of translation and used as a kind of scaffolding mode in translation teaching/training.Through innovative teaching design, style guides can be used as a kind of invaluable materials, and its content can be conveyed to the students in methods like project-driven classroom and so on.
