Report On English-Chinese Translation Of Advances In Industrial Design Engineering

This is a report on the English-Chinese translation of popular science work Advances in Industrial Design Engineering.This books presents advanced design concepts and classical examples of industrial design.It is selected for the translation practice because its highly practical and wide-ranging content are of vast reference value for Chinese industrial designers and students studying the industrial design.On the other hand,it can offer inspirations for readers from many different walks of life.In the process of the translation project,the translator finds it a challenge to deal with the flexibly-used terms,the differences of the building of sentences,textual coherence and the full display of style.Faced with these difficulties,the translator of this project sets out to translate and study from her own experience by reflecting on and exploring new translation standards which are applicable for popular science text translation,so as to produce excellent translation of higher readability.First,the translator conducts a through analysis of English for science &technology and popular science text.Next,the translator resorts to previous experience and research to solve puzzles during the translation.On this basis,the translator distills three translation standards by taking Yan Fu's translation ideas for reference and validate the feasibility of them in guiding this translation project.During the examining of concrete examples,some translation methods are also offered and discussed.At last,this paper concludes by summarizing the findings and giving suggestions.The translation practice indicates that popular science translation may follow three translation standards presented in this report.First and foremost,the translation should be truthful to the objective content of source text;Second,it is important for the translation to be well accepted by the target readers with a full consideration of readers' habitual expressionand knowledge reserve;At last,the translation is supposed to easy to read and contain aesthetic value.If popular science translation reaches these standards,it may better achieve the purpose of popular science text,including popularizing scientific knowledge,broadening scientific vision and cultivating scientific thinking.
