This is a report on an English-Chinese translation practice.The source text is excerpted from A Post-Liberal Approach to Language Policy in Education by the American writer John E.Petrovic.This book was published in 2014;and there has been no Chinese version so far,which is one of the major reasons why the translator selects it for the translation project.The first two chapters are chosen as the source text,which contains over 17,000 English words.The selected part primarily focuses on the foundational connections among language policy,identity and liberalism.What's more,it also discusses the correlation between formalist liberalism and language policy.This translation report first lists the difficulties the translator encounters in the course of translation and then elaborates the corresponding solutions.The difficulties are mainly shown on the lexical level and the syntactic level,such as the translation of terminologies,common words with special meaning,other difficult words,complex sentences and passive sentences.In allusion to the difficulties mentioned above,the translator adopts various translation methods.When it comes to terminologies,the translator mainly employs literal translation method to translate them.As to common words with special meaning,the translator reveals the true meanings of these words by the extension of word meaning.Besides,conversion of parts of speech and application of Chinese four-character idioms methods are also employed to translate other difficult words met in the source text.To solve the syntactic difficulties,the translator uses the methods of following the original syntactic order and recasting the sentence structure to translate complex sentences,and chooses the method of converting voice to translate passive sentences.In the course of translation,the translator tries to reproduce the content and style of the original work as much as possible from the perspective of the target readers.By translating this source text,the translator aims to offer the relevant Chinese readers a platform to understand the language policy in education,and do a pygmy effort for the development of language policy in domestic education.Moreover,the translator expects that the translated text of the first two chapters of this book can provide some references for the further translation of the later chapters.
