A Report On The E-C Translation Of China Daily INews From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

With the development of globalization,China has established closer relation with other countries in terms of economy,politics,culture and society.As a form of stylistics,news has become an important tool to transfer information.Through foreign news,China's readers can have a deep insight into current events that take place in other countries,which deepens their understanding on western countries.Nevertheless,most of them have difficulty in reading English news,which makes the translation of news practically meaningful.This report firstly introduces the background of this English-Chinese translation project of China Daily i News,the translation process as well as the main points of view of relevance theory.Based on relevance theory and the features of news as a genre,this report analyzes the E-C translation strategies of news headlines,news leads and bodies of news.Through the case study,the author found that due to the linguistic and cognitive differences between Chinese readers and foreign readers,appropriate translation strategies should be applied in translation in order to achieve the optimal relevance between the source text and the translated text,which may guarantee the accuracy and coherence of translation.Finally,the author summarizes the experience drawn from this practice and the role relevance theory plays in the translation of news.This practice shows that due attention should be paid to the context of news and the cognitive environment of target readers to ensure the realization of the communicative intention.
