This critical commentary is based on the selected E-C translation. The source text of the translation is Chapter 4 of Railways in the Landscape: How they transformed the face of Britain written by Gordon Biddle. This chapter mainly records how the railway transformed the face of British towns and what impact it brought to the townscapes. It describes in turn the effects of railways on London, some large provincial cities, smaller towns and suburbs. The source text belongs to popular science text and it is an informative text as well.Since the translation aims to convey the information accurately and completely to make the target text achieve the informative function as the source text does, the translator applies Christina Nord's function plus loyalty theory to guide the translation.Nord proposed documentary translation and instrumental translation according to different functions that the target text would achieve. This critical commentary mainly focuses on instrumental translation to make the target text conform to the target culture and to faithfully convey the information recorded in the source text.In this critical commentary, the application of instrumental translation is analyzed from lexical level, syntactic level and semantic level. Some adopted translation techniques illustrated in this commentary include addition, conversion, and the use of four-character idioms on lexical level;amplification and reinventing sentence structures on syntactic level;semantic selection of polysemy and semantic extension on semantic level.Under the guidance of function plus loyalty theory, case analysis is used to explain the application of instrumental translation in translation practice. In order to use appropriate translation techniques for a better translation, two versions of the translation are given to make a comparative study. It is hoped that this project can enrich the translation in this field and of this type of text.
