Martin Van Buren is a biography introducing Martin Van Buren,the eighth president of the United States,and comprehensively tells the life of President Van Buren and his extremely hard work and struggle life.This book provides us with abundant information for studying Van Buren and learning the development of American political parties in the first half of the 19 th century.Readers will gain a lot in the following three aspects:(1)understanding Van Buren;(2)understanding Van Buren's political ideology and practice on the political party restruction and changes in the political trend of thought in his period;(3)understanding the early history of the United States.Understanding the United States yesterday can help us better understand the United States' today.At present,the book is a systematic introduction of President Van Buren's work,it is the first time that Chinese version appears in China.The source text of the translation task is selected from Chapter I and Chapter II of the Biography,10096 words in total.The whole text is mainly informative and with expressive characteristic.This report is based on the text typology raised by English translation theorist Peter Newmark.Because the original content belongs to biographical literature,its stylistic features are both documentary and literary.In order to enable the readers to better understand the content,the translator uses the semantic translation and communicative translation methods proposed by Newmark to guide the translation process.The interactive use of the two translation methods not only preserves the language characteristics of the source text,but also allows the translation to be accepted by the target language readers,in order to achieve cultural exchange and promotion.In this translation report,the translator first consulted and introduced the background knowledge and the author of Martin Van Buren.In the process of translation,the translator encountered problems such as cultural-loaded words translation,long and short sentences translation,legal terms expression,political terms expression,translation of place names,and logical relationship processing.In the case analysis section,the translator uses the translation method of semantic translation and communicative translation according to the text typology,and combines translation techniques such as transliteration,supplementary translation and omission translation techniques to solve these problems reasonably.After repeated revisions and refinements,the quality of the translation can meet the requirements of the client.Finally,the translation practice is summarized and the unresolved problems encountered in translation practice are reflected.
