A Report On Translating The Meandering Jinjiang River:the History Of Bashu Culture (section Twelve Of Chapter ?)

Culture has no borders.The progress of the times has greatly promoted cultural exchanges between countries and nations all over the world.With the proposal and promotion of “One Belt and One Road Initiative”,the measure of “spreading Chinese culture” conforms to the historical trend and is necessary.This translation report is written on the basis of the Chinese-English translation practice of The Meandering Jinjiang River: The History of Bashu Culture,aiming to promote the development the going-out of Chinese culture via translation.This book is written by Duan Yu and Tan Luofei.It mainly introduces the history of Bashu culture from prehistoric period to Ming and Qing dynasties.The translator selects Section Twelve of Chapter II as the original text which presents the communication and exchanges of civilizations between ancient Bashu and other areas.This report introduces the background of the translation project and the three principles of Alexander Fraser Tytler.Then the part of case study demonstrates how the translator applies translation techniques such as addition,omission,division,combination,and shift to guide the translation practice and solve problems encountered in the process,under the guidance of the three principles.When translating cultural works,translators often encounter difficulties in translating culture-loaded words as well as long and difficult sentences.Based on the three principles of Tytler,translators need to choose appropriate translation techniques to better solve these problems and make the translation in line with the habits of the target language.Translators at home and abroad often use Tytler's translation principles to guide poetry and fiction translation,and there are few practices in guiding the translation of information-oriented texts.And there are not a few translation works of local Chinese culture,especially southwestern culture.Therefore,the translator translates the text of Bashu culture by taking the three principles into consideration and sums up some experience and lessons on this type of translation.This practice is expected to provide reference for the application of Tytler's translation principles in different fields of practice and for the translation of such cultural works.Additionally,the translator also looks forward to promoting more local Chinese cultures to the outside world through this practice.
