This translation practice is based on the American writer John Pomfret's The Beautiful Country and the Middle Kingdom. This book is actually a history of Sino-US relations from 1776 to the present day.In this book,John Pomfret depicts the Sino-US relations since the late Qing Dynasty. The Sino-US relations experienced fine fantasy, agog hope and thorough disappointment.Using the translation of The Beautiful Country and the Middle Kingdom as the research subject, this report deeply discusses the application of domestication and foreignization strategies in the translation of the novel.Translation involves not only language barriers but also cultural issues. The main factor restricting cross-language translation is culture,so in the process of translating this novel, the translator not only needs to overcome language barriers, but also crosses the cultural gap.Cultural differences in the translation process can be solved by means of domestication and foreignization strategies.Domestication means translation centering on the cultural and linguistic features of the target language to achieve functional equivalence. To be more specific,it requires the translator to use idiomatic expressions and language specifications in target language to make the translation smooth and fluent.Foreignization means translation centering on the linguistic and cultural characteristics of the source language to achieve exotic style. This source language-oriented way of translation requires the translators to maintain the foreign flavor and exoticism. The translator combines them into the process of translating The Beautiful Country and the Middle Kingdom. This report elaborates on the translation process, experience, difficulties encountered in translation and their solutions with thorough analysis of representative cases,in order to illustrate how to use the domestication and foreignization translation strategies to overcome culture differences between source and target language, which aims to provide examples for the translation of relevant subjects.
