According to the current research findings,compared with other countries,the level of Chinese language and Chinese culture promotion in Rwanda is considerably weak.And one of the major causes is Chinese learners'strong dependency on English as medium language.This dependency manifest in two ways as follow:(1)Chinese learners use English to think about Chinese expression(that is they use English to think,then Chinese to express),which leads to the lack of Chinese thinking ability,and the decline of interests of using Chinese language.(2)Chinese learners rely on English to understand the textbook when they learning Chinese(like reading English translation and notes,rather than reading Chinese explanation and notes).In this case,this study aims to investigate and analyze the reasons for Rwandan Chinese learners' dependency on English as medium language,so as to solve the above problems and put forward feasible suggestions.This paper takes the students and teachers from the Confucius Institute of University of Rwanda college of Education as the the research object,and according to Chinese international teaching and learning relevant theories of using medium language,aims to analyze the reasons why Chinese learners in Rwanda rely on English as medium language.The main questions to be answered are as follows:According to the language use in Rwanda,can Chinese learners not rely on English as medium language?Considering the currents Chinese teaching materials and teaching aids,how to ensure that Rwandan Chinese learners can improve the interests in using Chinese,Chinese thinking ability and progress in learning without relying on English as medium language?Does Rwanda have a required Chinese language environment to help Chinese learners improve their Chinese thinking ability and reduce the dependency on English as medium language?In order to investigate and analyze the main factors of Chinese learners dependence on English and the decline of their thinking and expression using Chinese,this paper uses questionnaires survey,interview survey and classroom observation as research methodology.First of all,the author conducted classroom observation in different levels of Chinese classes.Secondly,the author red both printed and electronic books regardingChinese education both in Rwanda and worldwide,and the most challenges it may face including the use of medium language.Finally,questionnaires were conducted among 40 students of Confucius Institute in Kigali,and 11 Chinese teachers(including local teachers)were surveyed.Through a thorough investigation and analysis,the author found that the major problems Rwandan Chinese education is facing are:insufficient Chinese classroom time,single teaching mode,no suitable textbooks,and the lack of Chinese language environment.And this paper argues that these problems are the main factors that lead to the high level of English dependency,the lack of Chinese thinking and expression ability and the slow progress of learning as well.Therefore,this paper argues that to solve student's dependency on English as medium language may be a once-and-for-all process,but some efforts may be made to take some measures to enhance learners interest in using Chinese.For example,by increasing classroom time and teaching and learning places,write Chinese textbooks that both meet the learners need and easy to understand,updating teaching mode,such using PPT presentation teaching mode,using games,apply "Learning By Doing" teaching mode,arrange Chinese language debates,train local Chinese teachers,and increase academic research as well.
