This report is based on the author's translation practice of the Children Foul & Cheesy Jokes & Facts entrusted by Rightol Media Company from October to November in 2017.The author has accomplished the translation tasks of these two volumes Science and History in the 12 books of the series with the amount of translation practice about 20,000 words.Proposed by Peter Newmark, communicative translation theory focuses on the readers of the TL and attempts to render the exact contextual meaning of the original in such a way that both content and language are readily acceptable and comprehensible to the readership and try to use different translation methods according to different types of texts.According to Newmark's text typology, the ST involved in this translation practice belongs to both informative texts and expressive texts.Communicative translation method can be applied to the translation of informative texts, making the TT concise and clear and conveying the content of the ST accurately, and thus helps achieve the communicative effect;semantic translation method can be used in the translation of expressive texts, reproducing the original feelings and effectively preserving the original style and form in the TT.Therefore, this report discussed the key points and difficulties of E-C translation of children's popular science readings in the process of translating informative texts, expressive texts and cultural information, and analyzed the application of both communicative and semantic translation methods in solving different translation problems in order to improve the quality of children's popular science translation. With case analysis, this report summarizes the specific problems encountered during the translation practice.Firstly,as regard to the translation of the original long sentences, passive voice, proper nouns and logical structure, the author adopted the methods of division, using active voice, amplification and explicitation, respectively,to make the TT easier for the target readers to accept.Secondly,as a large number of rhetorical devices are used in the ST,such as puns, alliterations and parodies, the author reproduced the effect of expression in the TT by the methods of omission, annotation and adaptation,so as to preserve the original style and form and achieve the communicative effects.Thirdly, when translating the culture-loaded words and historical allusions, the author employed the method of adding annotations to deliver the cultural information concerned in the TT effectively. After the completion of the translation task, the author realized that Peter Newmark's communicative translation theory proves instructive in guiding a translator to choose proper translation strategy at the macro level and select appropriate translation techniques at the micro level.Additionally, the translator's competences of bilingual expression and comprehension also have a great impact on the achievement of the translation. Finally, the author's experiences in this translation practice are also expected to provide some references for other translators engaged in children's popular science translation.
