A Translation Report On Enshi Folk Custom

This paper is a translation practice report based on the English translation of some ethnic cultural contents in Enshi Folk Custom.This paper takes the excerpt of Enshi Folk Custom,a book about the folk culture of Enshi,Hubei,as an English translation object.The paper is divided into five parts:The first part is the task description,which involves the task background,task description,task significance and the structure of the paper.The second part is the task process,including pre-translation preparation,translation process and post-translation processing.The third part is the theoretical framework,which introduces the Skopos Theory,Skopos Theory-guided translation principles,translation strategies and translation methods.The fourth part is the case analysis from the lexical,syntactic and textual level to make the concrete analysis.The fifth part is the conclusion,including the main findings,shortcomings and recommendations.This paper analyzes the national vocabularies in Enshi Folk Custom and some special sentences and paragraphs in the book.Among them,the vocabulary of national characteristics mainly involves folk festivals and customs,lifestyle,folk manners and folk art,etc.Special sentences include some complicated sentences and proverbs.The paragraphs mainly relate to the translation of the story of the characters,the origin of the place name,and the translation of some interesting stories.According to the contents and characteristics of these special words,sentences and paragraphs,this paper puts forward the translation strategy of "foreignization going first and domestication second." Based on these strategies,the methods of transliteration,transliteration plus annotation,literal translation,literal translation plus annotation and liberal translation are chosen to translate them.The results show that these translation principles and translation methods can better guide the translation practice of ethnic vocabularies,special sentences and paragraphs in Enshi Folk Custom,improve the quality of translation,and achieve the purpose of spreading the Tujia and Miao folk culture.
