Study On Synecdoche Conversion Strategies In Consecutive Interpreting From The Perspective Of Interpretive Theory

This study aims to analyze synecdoche conversions from Chinese into English in consecutive interpretation through a case study of MOFA-XINHUA Forum 2018.It sheds light on what synecdoche transition strategies interpreters could apply in order to establish equivalence between source texts and target texts and to recreate the cultural elements of original texts.Synecdoche in this study is not examined as a figure of speech but a ubiquitous language phenomenon: the part-whole relationship between the signifier and the signified.A written text or an oral discourse designates only one characteristic trait of an idea to communicate it as a whole,and different languages often choose different traits.Many interpreters who are familiar of the interpretive model of translation,including its key concepts such as the keyhole principle and synecdoche,still rarely achieve appropriate synecdoche conversions under the strain of live performances.To bridge the gap between theory and practice,five strategies has been employed to guide interpreters through synecdoche conversion procedures,including drawing mental pictures,grasping the actual referent,reproducing the function of symbolism and idioms and,finally,adapting to collocative and grammatical habits in the target language.Interpreters also should help their audience to comprehend the cultural elements presented by speakers thorough clarification of certain concepts which are said implicitly in the original.Based on the principle of economy and efficiency of language,interpreters should provide a minimum but adequate amount of additional information to give foreign listeners a window into the original culture.In this process,specific linguistic means,such as reformulation and clarification,are required to illuminate the implicit content of the original.
