A Report On C-E Translation Of A Guide To Guangzhou

This is a report on English translation of A Guide to Guangzhou.Based on Newmark's Text Typology,the report analyzed the text features and text types of travel guide,and their related translation strategies.Then it further discussed and explored the major difficulties from lexical and syntactic level and proposed the corresponding translation methods.The difficulties at lexical level included translation of vocabularies of architectures,festivals,Guangzhou custom characteristics and names of scenic spots and places,literal translation,transliteration,annotation,free translation,omission and amplification were adopted to completely convey the information and achieve the communicative effect;The difficulties at syntactic level consisted of parallel sentences and long sentences,the methods restructuring,paraphrasing and reordering were employed to conform to the sentence structure and idiomatic expression of target language.This report indicated that translation of travel guide should be foreign tourists-oriented and focus on communicative effect.
