With the continuous development of economy and the promotion of the comprehensive national strength of our country,the demand of domestic people for clothing is gradually increasing.The translation of clothing texts has become an important bridge to spread clothing knowledge to the public and is of great referential value and instructional significance to the development of the garment industry of China.This report,based on the translation of the introduction part,chapter 1 and chapter 2 of Constructions for Fashion Design(2nd edition)?Fischer,A&Gobin,K,2017?,a book of clothing craft skills,mainly analyzes the difficulties and representative problems the translator has met under the instruction of the Communicative Translation Theory,one part of Peter Newmark's representative theories on translation.As a reasonable result,some translation strategies are raised for the translation of clothing texts.Based on the relation of the research background and significance of this report,the translation process which consists of the pre-translation preparation,the translation process,and the post-translation revision is introduced.Then supported by the Communicative Translation Theory and the text typology theory of Newmark,some typical cases are deeply analyzed from the aspects of lexical translation,syntactic translation,and textual translation.The process of the translation makes the translator find that in the clothing texts,1)thelinguistic distinctions between English and Chinese and the professionalization of the source text language usually bring some difficulties to the understanding and translation of the word meaning;2)large numbers of passive sentences and compound sentences in the source text give great difficulties to the conversion of languages;and 3)some sentences which are verbose in structure and loose in information bring certain challenges to the integration of the language.Facing with these problems,this article puts forward some translation strategies and methods.They are word extension and conversion,active processing of passive voice,sentence restructuring,segmentation,amplification,etc.All of these strategies aim at bridging the language gap to realize effective conversions between the two languages and achieving the communicative purpose of translation.It is expected that this report can provide references for future translation of clothing texts.
