Long Sentence Translation In The Historical Cultural Text

Translation is not only the transfer of languages,but also the transformation of various linguistic symbols and language types.In this regard,many excellent translation theories have been put forward by scholars at home and abroad.Among them,Eugene Nida,the famous American translator and translation theorist,has attracted wide attention for his notion of functional equivalence.Nida maintains that translation and the original text should achieve equivalence in language function,not just in linguistic form.In addition,Nida breaks through the tradition and gives the reader the right to decide the quality of translated text,which infuses vitality into the study of translation.This paper takes Nida's functional equivalence as the theoretical framework,studies the long sentences in the histo-cultural book Chinese: Their History and Culture,which is written by American writer Kenneth Scott Latourette,and discusses different ways to attain dynamic equivalence in such a genre.Based on the translation practice and case analysis,the paper also discusses the strategies in translating long sentences from English to Chinese.This paper is divided into five parts.The first chapter ma inly includes the background of the book,the author,stylistic features of historical texts.The second chapter introduces the translation process and in the third chapter introduces functional equivalence as a translation theory is discussed.The fourth chapter is the case analysis in which the translation strategies suitable for the histo-cultural texts are analyzed in relation to long sentences.
