This translation material is excerpted from Ocean Outbreak: Confronting the Rising Tide of Marine Disease,which mainly describes the marine ecologist Drew Harvell and her colleagues' investigation on how the four iconic marine animals namely coral,abalone,salmon and starfish have been devastated by disease.This masterpiece is to arouse people's attention and call on people to protect the marine ecological environment and our planet.The author is responsible for translating the fourth and fifth chapters of the book,totaling over 25000 words.This report is mainly a review and summary of the translation practice in chapter five,from which a number of translation examples are selected for analysis.This report is guided by the text typology theory of Reiss.Reiss proposed three functional text types: informative text,expressive text and operative text.Ocean Outbreak is a natural science book.According to the text typology theory,the original text belongs to the informative texts,which focuses on conveying “information” and “facts”.Therefore,the translator must convey the content of the source text accurately and completely.When translating such a text,the translator's first task is to convey the information of the source text truthfully.In the process of translation,the translator does not have to stick to the form and structure of the original text,but can make proper conversion according to the actual situation.In order to transmit the original information accurately and completely,the translator can adopt appropriate translation strategies and methods,so as to make the translation more fluent and concise.This translation report is divided into four parts.The first part is the description of translation task,including the source of translation task,the brief introduction of translation text and the significance of translation project.The second part is the translation process,including the preparation before translation,analysis and modification of the first draft,analysis and modification of the second draft,analysis and refinement of the final draft.The third part is case study.Under the guidance of the text typology of Reiss,the author discusses and analyzes the typical cases in the process of translation by combining the translation methods such as addition,splitting,transformation and reorganization.The fourth part is the summary of translation practice.The author summarizes the gains,shortcomings,enlightenment and prospect for future work.
