Yoga,as a common way for physical and mental cultivation,is more and more popular in people's lives.Yoga offers great comfort and relaxation to people's body as well as mind.Nowadays, there are more and more yoga institutions across the country and some colleges have introduced yoga courses. In the spread of yoga culture, translation plays a key role. However, few studies can be found in translation of yoga texts, and related guiding theory and translation methods have not been fully developed.According to communicative translation theory, translation should be based on the accurate transmission of information, and try to produce on the target text readers an effect as close as possible to that on the readers of the original text.According to Newmark's classification of text types, yoga texts belong to informative texts. In translation of yoga texts, accurate transmission of original information and communicative effect produced on target readers are of great importance. Therefore, under the guidance of communicative translation theory, this thesis takes Chapter 2 of Teaching Yoga:Essential Foundations and Techniques as an example to analyze typical features of yoga texts and puts forward feasible translation methods.Based on the translation practice of Teaching Yoga:Essential Foundations and Techniques(Chapter 2),this thesis analyzes the typical features of yoga texts:high frequency of Sanskrit-based yoga terms, human anatomy terms and cultural-loaded words at lexical level;frequent use of long and complex sentences as well as imperative sentences at syntactic level. Then, from the perspective of communicative translation theory, this thesis puts forward two translation principles of yoga texts based on the typical features of yoga texts:effective transmission of communicative information and emphasis on readers'acceptance. On the basis of these two principles, the thesis explores some feasible translation methods, which include the use of literal translation and paraphrase to faithfully and accurately convey the meanings of yoga-related terms and human anatomy terms, the use of annotation to explain the cultural information behind the cultural-loaded words, the use of division, inversion and shift of perspective in translation of lo ng and complex sentences as well as imperative sentences to make translation fluent, idiomatic and reader-friendly.Through these analyses, this thesis concludes that the translation of yoga texts with typical features must adopt feasible translation methods, accurately conveying communicative information contained in the source text, meanwhile, make translation readily understood and accepted by target readers, and produce the same effect on target text readers as obtained by the original text readers,so as to achieve the communicative purpose.Guided by communicative translation theory, the thesis analyzes the typical features of yoga texts and explores corresponding translation methods. It is hoped that the thesis can arouse more translators' interest in translation practice of yoga texts and provide reference for related researches on translation of yoga texts in the future.
