Represented by Seleskovitch and Lederer,in its half-a-century long history, the Paris School of Interpretive Theory of Translation suggests that the process of interpreting is an act of communication. In the theory, the object of interpreting should be the “sense” of the speech instead of the “form” or the “structure” of languages.According to the theory, the school proposed a triangular model of interpreting which shows that in the process of consecutive interpreting,an interpreter should go through three stages, namely, comprehension, deverbalization and expression, among which deverbalization is at the core.In the process of consecutive interpreting, interpreters deliver what they have heard in the target language after listening to a certain length of speech from the speaker. The application of deverbalization can enhance the quality of their interpretation. In addition, according to the interpretive theory, interpreters should also actively apply the deverbalization strategy to avoid confusing the audience with literally interpreted target languages from word-to-word transposition. In this paper, the author's English-Chinese consecutive interpreting of the presentation Meet the Germans in 2018 is used as a case study.Basing on the transcript of the recording, the author found both successful and unsuccessful deverbalization examples. The unsuccessful examples can be mainly concluded as follows: disfluent interpretation of numerals, unsuccessful transformation from English nouns to Chinese verbs, misinterpretation due to syntactical differences as well as speaker's confusing accent, and misinterpretation of culture-loaded words. Both successful and unsuccessful examples are given and analyzed in detail. The correction of the misinterpretation, and strategies or suggestions to enhance deverbalization are also offered in the paper.
