This report is based on the translation practice of the fifth Chapter of Documentary,World History,and National Power in the PRC: Global Rise in Chinese Eyes by Gotelind Müller.This book is categorized as the academic papers specialized in "China Studies"."China Studies",as an emerging subject of overseas social science,which often poses a huge impact on the policy-making of foreign governments,has drawn an increasing attention of Chinese government and scholars.Translation is one of the important channels for Chinese government and scholars to make a better understanding of foreign scholars' views on China.Therefore,the translation of the academic papers of "China Studies" and the study of their translation become increasingly significant.The academic paper of "China Studies" is characterized by its multilingual expressions,terms,long and complex sentence structures as well as the connotation of some expressions concerning with ideology and cultureThe translation of the academic papers of "China Studies" is to provide a reference for the policy-making of Chinese government and professionals.According to Verschueren's adaptation theory,using language in communication involves the continuous making of linguistic choices.Translation,as a kind of cross-cultural communication,is also a continuous making of linguistic choices.In the translation process,translators have to make choices of translation strategies and methods as well as dynamically adapt to different aspects of the source language and the target language.Therefore,the adaptation theory is practical to be used as a guidance for the translation practice and translation study of the academic paper of "China Studies".Based on Verschueren's adaptation theory,the report explores the translation of the fifth Chapter of the book.The report first gives a description of the translation task and process,and then selects some typical examples to explore how the chapter was translated under the guidance of the principles of adaptability adopted in the translation process,which are categorized into three aspects,namely,contextualcorrelates,structural objects and degrees of salience.Finally,the report sums up the application of the adaption theory in the translation practice and then constructs a theoretical framework for the translation of the academic paper of "China studies"according to its text characteristics.Moreover,the translation methods and strategies adopted in the translation practice are also summarized.In the report,the author finds out that the adaption theory is a powerful tool for uncovering the processes and for explaining the motivation behind the author's and the translator's choices.Translation is a complex and motivated process of multilingual and cross-cultural communication.In the translation process,the translator dynamically adapts to different aspects with different degrees of salience.It is hoped that the adaption theory is to have enlightenment to the domestic translation practice and study of the academic papers of "China studies".
