The study of intercultural communication began in the 1950 s in foreign countries and it started in the 1980 s in China.It is necessary to translate those texts and it will be helpful for more college students,especially those majoring in English and cross-cultural communication,to learn and master the theoretical knowledge of cross-cultural communication and cultivate the competence of cross-cultural communication.In view of this,the author translated the fifth and sixth chapters of the book The Essential Guide to Intercultural Communication which is written by Jennifer Willis Rivera,an expert in intercultural communication and analyzed the difficulties and strategies of translation.The fifth chapter discusses intercultural communication in context: relationship and organization and the sixth chapter is about cross-cultural communication and popular culture.By studying the basic theories and knowledge of intercultural communication,the author analyzes the characteristics of written language in the theoretical explanation and colloquialism in the case study of the intercultural communication texts and describes the process of standardized translation,preparation before translation,matters in translation and the key points of review.English comparative sentence which is difficult for Chinese translators to deal with is explained in the report.In addition,passive sentence structure,adverbs,adjectives,cohesion and coherence are expounded in the report mainly through using translation skills and methods such as adding words,deleting the subject of the sentence,reversing the sentence order and making use of punctuation.The author finds that although there is no written principle in academic translation,it can be translated and reviewed from the perspective of translator's self-help and reader's assistance.Translator's self-help means that translators give full play to their initiative and learn the relevant courses in this field systematically before translation.Readers' assistance refers to asking professional scholars for help to review terminology.Through the cooperation of translators and readers,academic translation can be completed more rigorously,and the quality of translation can also be better improved.This conclusion is worth the effort and provides reference for the future academic text translation practice.
