A Research On The C-E Translation Of The Border Town From The Perspective Of Translation Ethics

French literature translator,translation theorist and philosopher Antoine Berman took the lead in 1980 s in advocating the concept of “translation ethics”(éthique de traduction).Inspired by Antoine Berman,some western scholars turned to the research of translation ethics and a series of research achievements have been made.Andrew Chesterman is one of the most influential scholars,who has absorbed different ideas of others and summarized the four modes of translation ethics,namely,the ethics of representation,ethics of service,ethics of communication,and norm-based ethics.Later,referring to the professional ethics of doctors,he put forward the fifth mode of translation ethic--ethics of professional commitment,which is equivalent to the norms and vows of professional ethics of translators(Chesterman,2001,p.148).China's translation ethics research started in 2001.Some researchers introduced translation ethics theories of western studies,such as Zhang Jinghua(2009),Chen Zhendong(2010).Some researchers focused on exploring translation ethics theories,such as Lv Jun(2001),Wang Dazhi(2005).Some researchers made innovations on the base of deep investigation,such as Wang Dongfeng(2008).However,few have explored the specific instances in literary works.The Border Town is a novella written by Mr.Shen Congwen,which occupies a significant position in the history of modern Chinese literature.In the more than 80 years since its introduction,The Border Town has attracted countless readers,and has been translated into more than 40 languages and spread widely throughout the world.The Border Town enshrines Shen Congwen's aesthetic ideals of “beauty” and “love”.It is expressed through the description of the tragedy of love between Emerald and Nuosong,the sincere dearness between grandpa and Emerald,the kindness and love between neighbors and the beauty of human nature to dilute the darkness and pain of reality as well as to chant a simple humanity and lifestyle symbolizing “love” and“beauty”,all the above is a reflection of the traditional Chinese national spirit.This paper intends to use Chesterman's translation ethics as a guide and takeGladys' s translation of The Border Town as an example to analyze in depth the specific methods and relevant translation strategies of Chesterman's five translation ethics used in the text.In the face of ethical conflict,especially the ethics of representation and others,the translator's approach and motivation will be briefly discussed.Through the analysis of examples,this paper believes that in the process of translating The Border Town,Gladys fully achieved the organic unity of respecting the author,the original text,the reader,and the customer(publisher),which perfectly reflects Chesterman's five models of translation ethics.Of course,due to China's reform and opening up,letting more foreign readers understand Chinese culture became a major demand of the era.Although there are different focuses in different contexts,when different ethical models conflict,Gladys preferred to choose the ethics of representation and strives to make readers “truly” understand Chinese culture.Today,China's national strength continues to develop,and the call for “cultural self-confidence” has become stronger.This is almost the same background when Gladys translated The Border Town.By studying the concrete manifestation of The Border Town and Chesterman's translation ethics,the author hopes it could be of important reference for our translators to translate literary works in the future.
