In English-Chinese consecutive interpreting,Chinese interpreters should be capable of delivering in a succinct, fluent, grammatically and semantically correct manner. They start interpreting after the speaker has finished part of the speech, which means there's contextual information to help them work into their mother tongue. When too much redundancy occurs, however, the interpretation would inevitably become longer, less effective and efficient than the original speech.During the mock conference of Ian Newton “Refugee Crisis amid Covid-19 Pandemic”,the author was troubled by unnecessary redundancy, which significantly undermined the quality of the interpretation. As a result, this thesis studies the different cases of redundancy that occurred in the mock conference to figure out the causes and coping tactics of redundancy.Based on information theory, translation studies and the author's own experience, this thesis first divides cases of redundancy into three main categories according to their different causes. This thesis then comes up with several coping tactics that are tailored to the root causes of redundancy in each category.
