A Report On Chinese-English News Trans-Editing Of China Daily Hunan Bureau Project

Local news is a crucial channel for readers to understand the local society,economy and culture.Thus,doing a good job in local news translation is crucial to the development of the industry it serves and the dissemination of local culture.Based on the news trans-editing of China Daily Hunan Bureau Project,this report explores the problems that translators may face in the translation practice of such texts and provides the corresponding translation strategies.The news texts translated by the translator come from the Kaifu District Government website,the Xiangxiang Municipal Government website,and the official website of Zhangjiajie Tourism,covers abundant information,the contents of which involve people’s livelihood,employment,technology,economy,entertainment and tourism.The news texts of the three websites share the following features: 1)there are semantic repetition,cultureloaded words,and numeral abbreviations in the news;2)active voice and run-on sentences frequently appear in the news text;3)many titles use rhetorical techniques such as pun,antithesis,and metaphor;4)some leads are obscure,redundant,empty and abstract;5)many texts are written with unreasonable structure.In the process of translation,the translator tried to summarize the translation skills based on the feedback from the editor and proofreader.In order to achieve better effects of news dissemination,translators can adopt shift,omission,annotation and contextual amplification to cope with the English translation of semantic repetition,culture-loaded words,and numeral abbreviations;in translating sentences with more active voice and run-on sentences in the text,some translation skills,such as transforming voices,using connectives,reframing sentences,can be used to make sentences more fluently;news headlines should be concise and creative if possible;leads should help readers grasp the essence and essentials of the text;adjustment and rewriting can be made if the structure of a news story is illogical.This report hopes to provide reference for translators engaged in Chinese-English news translation,and sample reference for ChineseEnglish translation research.Besides,it can help improve the quality of English translation of news on local government websites,and contribute to the development of regional investment,foreign publicity,and tourism.
