A Project Report On The C-E Translation Of Regulations Of Jiangsu Province On Expressways

The C-E translation of laws and regulations,as a major channel of legal communication with the international community,can contribute to the development of our society ruled by law and the refinement of our legal systems while enhancing international communication by bringing Chinese legal culture to the outside world.With the Regulations of Jiangsu Province on Expressways being a typical local regulation,it shares the features of using professional terminologies,formal expressions and long sentences with rigorous logic.Since such characteristics are quite typical in the translation of legal documents,the author hopes to make her best contributions to relevant studies by writing this project report on the basis of the translation practice.This project report is written on the basis of the author's translation practice of the C-E translation of the Regulations of Jiangsu Province on Expressways.It analyzes the specific characteristics of legal texts,discusses the major translation difficulties and then puts forward several solutions to the difficulties under the guidance of the skopos theory.The major difficulties consist in both lexical and syntactical levels.Lexical difficulties involve the translation of technical words,modal verbs and formal words and phrases and they can be solved by referring to parallel texts,paraphrasing and ensuring the translation to be loyal to the original text.Syntactic difficulties mainly relate to the translation of “de”structures and long sentences.Adverbial clauses of condition and “v + ing” structures are introduced to address the former while translating in the original or reverse order and restructuring the sentences are methods used to tackle the latter.Through this project report,the author aims to propose feasible C-E translation strategies for the translation of the Regulations,hoping it could serve as a future reference for relevant translation practices and studies.
