Written by Andrew Shankman,Original Intents is an academic monograph about the disagreements among Thomas Jefferson,James Madison and Alexander Hamilton on solutions to build America. This report is based on the translation practice of the first chapter of this book.Chapter one discusses why Hamilton,Jefferson, and Madison all came to agree during the early 1780 s that the United States was in terrible danger, primarily because its citizens were failing to live up to their republican responsibilities, which paves way for introducing their disagreements. This project report makes an in-depth analysis of some key points and difficulties from three aspects: vocabulary, sentences and the discourse. These obstacles include the translation of proper nouns and other difficult words, complex and long sentences as well as the cohesion and coherence of the discourse. On the basis of Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory, this paper puts forward some specific solutions such as literal translation, liberal translation, splitting, reversing, cohesive devices and polishing.Through this translation practice, the author hopes to exchange experience and reflections with other translators.
