This paper mainly investigates primary student subjective feelings in learning chinese characters at SD.S Indo TiongHua Tarakan Indonesia,understands their feelings and thoughts on learning chinese characters from four aspects: personal condition,learning experience,classroom teaching experience and learning situation.In addition to students,this paper also investigated teachers' teaching situation,understood teaching of chinese characters and their views on chinese textbooks,to find a suitable chinese classroom teaching method for primary school at SD.S Indo Tionghua Tarakan Indonesia.Through the questionnaire survey and interviews,the author found that primary students at SD.S Indo Tionghua have chosen to learn chinese language is mainly because of parents decision,except chinese language,most students learn at least two kinds of foreign language;Their initiative of learning chinese characters is not strong enough,they don't pay much attention in learning chinese characters,they often use repeat writing method to remember chinese characters,the most difficult part of learning chinese characters is to distinguish similar chinese characters and homophonic characters;They only learn chinese characters at Chinese classroom,most of primary school students agree that chinese character courses will help them to study chinese characters;They wish teachers use different kind of interesting teaching methods when teaching chinese characters.Through a questionnaire survey and interviews of chinese teachers,the author found that: Chinese characters courses is depending on student requirement,teacher usually in the beginning explain all chinese characters,and then select more important chinese character and give more explanations;The difficult part of teaching chinese characters is pronunciation,stroke order and chinese character cultural background;Normally Chinese textbooks and other teaching tools including the examination papers are typed in chinese,if there are any words that student haven't learned before,teacher will use phonetic substitution;Teaching chinese character is not really important inIndonesia because of limited class hours,social environment,low level of chinese language proficiency;Chinese character teaching method quite simple,most frequently chinese character practising method are dictation and repeatedly copy-writing.At the end of this paper,based on the results of investigations and interviews,author has put forward some suggestions on teaching and learning of chinese characters for primary student at SD.S Indo Tionghua Tarakan Indonesia.
