A Study On The Exercises Attached To The Novel Texts In The Chinese Textbooks

The exercise attached to each text is an important component of Chinese textbooks.Novel as an important literary genre takes a substantial part in Chinese textbooks,and therefore the exercise attached in the textbooks is well worth our study.My thesis offers a systematic analysis of the exercises attached to the novel texts in the Chinese textbooks published by Language and Culture Press for students in junior high schools.The study is based on Bloom' s taxonomy of educational objectives and the survey conducted in Quanzhou No.3 Junior High School in Fujian.The textbook exercises in the edition by Language and Culture Press are of moderate amounts and designed mainly to train the students in comprehension and analysis.These exercises conform to the special features of the genre and most of them are interesting and enlightening and students can take the initiative in the practice.However,there are still some problems.Some of the exercises are far beyond the students' cognitive abilities and remote from their real life.The exercises are lacking in variety and concrete guidance for reading the text and finishing the tasks,and some of them are even ambiguous in statement.My thesis aims to help with the design and the teachers' use of the textbook exercises,thus to promote the improvement of the textbooks and the teaching efficiency.In terms of compilation of textbooks,the exercises designed should be in accordance with the students' cognitive development and easy to be related to their real life.The statement should be unambiguous and there should be a wider variety of tasks and more concrete guidance for reading the text and finishing the tasks.As for teachers,the exercises attached to the novel texts can serve as an inspiration to design the teaching process.Teachers can also use the exercises as in-class teaching materials as well as guidance for students to study the texts on their own.
