University And Government

The modern Chinese university was born out the self-rescue movement of Qing Dynasty Government,and it was deeply imprinted with political imprint from the very beginning.The development of any university in China cannot ignore the existence of the government.Cheeloo University,as a Christian university,is no exception."The relationship between university and government" is a dynamic proposition from beginning to end,showing different faces in different periods.The period from the Anti-Japanese War to the adjustment of the Higher Education Institutions of the New China was undoubtedly one of the most dramatic stages of social change in modern China.At this stage,the development of Cheeloo University was special and its relationship with the regimes was more complicated and diverse.During the period of Anti-war demobilization construction,Cheeloo University intentionally strengthened the interaction with the Nationalist Party Government considering the need for demobilization construction,and got much support and assistance.On the eve of the Jinan Campaign,Cheeloo University moved to the National Government District because of misjudgment of the domestic situation,only leaving a small number of personnel.After the liberation of Jinan,the left-behind personnel of Cheeloo University were all treated with the courtesy of the People's Government,made Cheeloo University officials and those who moved south saw the hope of continuing to run the university under the Communist regime.After the liberation of Hangzhou and Fuzhou,the teachers and students who move south wanted to return to jinan as soon as possible.After the foundation of New China,in order to meet the needs of national construction in the new era,Cheeloo University has carried out a series of reformation actively or passively,and also showed the determination to build the "People's University".It can be seen from the above that the change of the relationship between Cheeloo university and the governments in different periods was a rational choice made by Cheeloo university based on its own needs.In this process,the government was not blindly cooperating,they also had their own considerations,which was mainly reflected in the government's assistance or regulation of Cheeloo University.For example,the People's Government had regarded the southward move of Cheeloo University as a hostile act,and also denied the legitimacy of the southward mover.The above personnel after a twists and turns,finally returned to jinan.Undoubtedly,this event was the "first lesson" taught by the People's Government for teachers and students of Cheeloo University,which could regulate the thoughts and behaviors of teachers and students.For the two main bodies,university and government,both sides undoubtedly had the initiative in dealing with each other,which was a rational consideration based on their actual needs.For Cheeloo university in this period,this initiative was highlighted as a political tendency.From this dimension,some choices of Cheeloo University at that time were reasonable.
