With the arrival of the era of artificial intelligence and big data,Chinese education is facing an important problem: how to cultivate new talents who have key competency,and can solve complex problems in society,so as not to be replaced by machines.It enlightens school education to cultivate talents with critical and creative thinking.Jay Mctighe and Grant Wiggins are the core experts of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.To cultivate learner's higher-order thinking and innovate design strategy in question teaching,they put forward Essential Questions,which just provides a powerful reference for the question design of innovative Chinese reading teaching.The essential question is the bridge to guide students to explore big idea,an effective way igniting students' exploration to stimulate their higher-order thinking,and a procedure to cultivate students' ability to use knowledge.So it can help Chinese reading teaching to achieve the goal of developing students' key competency.Based on this,it is necessary to further explore how to design question in Chinese reading teaching from the perspective of essential question.Based on the perspective of Essential Question,this paper explores the design strategies of question teaching in Chinese reading,aims at innovating the question design and makes the students' reading learning process become solving Essential Question,thus stimulating students' higher-order thinking to promote students to experience deep reading,and cultivate their key competency in reading.The first part is introduction.On the basis of the connotation of “Question” and “Essential Question”,and the summary of the existing researches such as “Question design in Chinese reading teaching”,and based on Cognitive Learning Theory and Understand by Design Theory,this part explains the origin,ideas and methods,purpose and significance of the research.The second part reflects on the performance of “non-essential” question in Chinese reading teaching.In the question design of Chinese reading teaching,there are often many “non-essential” questions that destroy the integrity of the article and guide students to find information.The specific manifestations are the subject content problems that guide students to find subject facts and information,and the detailed problems in which answers could be found in the article itself.The third part analyzes the origin of Jay McTighe's essential question research,and clarifies the connotation and characteristics of essential question.Through analyzing the theoretical and practical research on essential question of Jay McTighe,it is found that the essential question is used as a bridge to guide students to explore the big ideas,a scaffold to inspire higher-order thinking of students,and a way to effectively cultivate students' knowledge application ability.The Essential Question is featuring with its three functions of leading students to big ideas,fostering their abilities to make full use of the knowledge and igniting their higher-order thinking respectively.The fourth part discusses the educational significance and design strategies of essential question.Based on essential question in Chinese reading teaching,the aim of this paper is to maintain the integrity of article reading.While stimulating students' higher-order thinking,it can not only promote their deep reading,but also improve their abilities to utilize knowledge and at the same time,speed up the transformation of teachers' teaching methods.The Chinese reading teaching towards essential question should include the following four design strategies at least: the refinement strategy of big ideas,the dismantling strategy of curriculum standards,the analysis strategy of different texts,and the expression strategy of essential question respectively.The fifth part focuses on the analysis of the implementation of Chinese reading teaching based on essential question.It is in short to apply the essential question design strategies to the question design in Chinese reading teaching,and then action research is conducted to test the effect of the essential question design strategies.After two rounds of action research,it is proved that the essential question design strategy of Chinese reading teaching has provided specific and feasible strategies for question design of Chinese reading teaching,improved the Chinese reading teaching question design methods,and also enhanced students' ability to use knowledge flexibly.The sixth part is about the limitation and prospect of the research.Through reviewing the research process and the refinement of the connotation,characteristics,and design strategies of the essential question,the directions for future researches on the essential question are provided.
