With the globalization of social economy, the rapid flow of information, and changes in market employment relationships in the 21 st century, the career environment of higher vocational students is becoming more and more complicated. The traditional linear, static, and reduced career development theory has been difficult to adapt to the needs of career planning and development of higher vocational students in the new environment. This study applies career chaos theory to the career planning of higher vocational students, which helps them to establish a more complete career planning in the career environment where order and chaos, stability and non-stability,risks and opportunities coexist. In the application practice of the theory,it provides new perspectives, viewpoints and more effective methods for career planning counseling and consulting work in higher vocational colleges.Based on the research of the semantics of “chaos” and chaos theory, this study respectively conducts a specific investigation and research on the accidental events, attractors and fractals in career planning of higher vocational students from three characteristics of initial value sensitivity, nonlinearity and self-similarity by quantitative and qualitative research methods. In the study of accidental events, questionnaires and case interviews are used to identify the sensitive factors in the career planning process of higher vocational students in China, namely the family environment, school environment, social environment, personal connections and work interests. The accidental event questionnaire with local characteristics are organized which can be used in the career planning of higher vocational students in China, and SPSS are used to further test the degree of significant difference between the five factors in career planning of higher vocational students. In the study of attractors, through the qualitative research method, the case interview consultation work is carried out,and the the points, pendulums, torus and strange attractors in the career planning of vocational college students are analyzed, and the applied research of attractors in career planning of higher vocational students are completed in the way of case presentation. In the study of fractals, the guiding significance of metaphor in career planning of higher vocational students is explored according to the distinctive features of fractal structure-self-similarity.According to the principle of prototype narrative, the specific application method of fractal in career planning of higher vocational students is proposed by using the qualitative research methodThe research results show that the career chaos theory has played a positive role in promoting the vocational students to understand the essence of their career and improve their ability to resist frustration in their career planning.Among them, accidental events have a greater impact on career planning of higher vocational students, especially school environmental factors. Therefore, higher vocational colleges should take the initiative to create a good environment for students' career development, keep up with the needs of the country and society, and continuously improve their career curriculum and career counseling;Attractors play a larger role in forming closed or open system thinking among higher vocational students.Research has found that open system thinking can effectively promote the higher vocational students to understand the dynamic changes of careers. To distinguish the form of attractors is the key to understand the complex career path. Finally, the study finds that there is also a self-similarity of the fractal structure in the individual' career.Teachers of higher vocational colleges can use metaphor to conduct career counseling according to this feature, help students understand the career story of others and achieve the goal of building their career path.
