With the accelerated development of China's urbanization process, the scale of cities continues to expand.A series of problems such as imbalances in land use structure, shortage of resources, and unreasonable urban spatial layout have seriously affected the sustainable and healthy development of cities. As an important starting point of the strategy for the rise of central China, the Wuhan City Circle has become more integrated with the construction of the city circle and the continuous development of the "two-type society".The demand for land is relatively high, and its urban land intensive use level and compact city development level are analyzed and understood The effect and mechanism of the two are helpful to improve the human settlement environment and promote the sustainable development of urban social economy, which is of great significance to the overall development of urban and rural areas in Hubei Province and even the central region. On this basis,by combing and analyzing the existing literature and related research, this paper constructs the evaluation index system of the two systems respectively, and uses the multi-factor comprehensive evaluation model based on entropy method to analyze the Wuhan city from 2007 to 2017.The urban land intensive utilization level and compact urban development level of the circle are measured and analyzed;the coupled coordinated development evaluation model is used to analyze the time series and space-time characteristics of the coupled and coordinated development of the two systems.Through empirical research, the following conclusions are drawn:(1)From 2007 to 2017,the intensive use of urban land and the development level of compact cities in the Wuhan metropolitan area showed a volatility increase, and the annual growth rate of intensive use of urban land was relatively high. The scores within the city circle are large, and the gap between cities is large.Except for Tianmen, the level of urban land intensive use basically shows a rising trend with a large increase;the development level of compact cities, except Xiantao, has increased, with a small increase.(2)The sequence characteristics of the coordinated development of the two systems of urban land use intensiveness and urban compactness in the Wuhan metropolitan area, except for Tianmen City, declined slightly, and the overall fluctuations increased. The coupling and coordinated development of Wuhan and Huangshi showed a steady growth, and the level of coupled and coordinated development was relatively high;the coupled and coordinated development of Xianning and Qianjiang was fluctuating and greatly improved. The characteristics affected by the fluctuation of the urban development level.During the study period, the coupling and coordinated development level of urban land use intensiveness and urban compactness has evolved from a benign to an advanced stage.(3)Using ArcGis 10.2 to conduct a spatial statistical analysis on the coupling and coordination of Wuhan City Circle,it is concluded that the areas with high coupling coordination are mainly distributed in the southeastern Hubei with Wuhan as the center, which is relatively far away from Wuhan City Circle. The coupling and coordination level of Xiantao and Qianjiang is low,and the agglomeration effect of coupling and coordinated development of urban land intensive use level and compact urban development level is not significant. In 2012 and 2017,Qianjiang City showed a low-low area, that is,Qianjiang City itself had a low level of coupling and coordination, and the surrounding cities had a low level of coupling and coordination. The rest of the areas were insignificant areas.
