A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Life We’re Looking For:Reclaiming Relationship In A Technological World(Excerpts)

This report is based on the E-C translation of The Life We’re Looking For:Reclaiming Relationship in a Technological World,a social science text written by an American writer Andy Crouch.Published in 2022,this book mainly focuses on the changing nature of relationships in a technological world and calls for people to rebuild intimacy.The first three chapters of the book are selected as translation materials.The source text contains a large number of complex sentences,which brings great difficulties to the translation task.Therefore,the translation of complex sentences is chosen as the research object of this report.The social science text belongs to informative text in terms of genre,which focus on delivering information to readers in an objective and accurate way of expression.Besides,the writer of this book wants to appeal to people to re-understand themselves and rebuild their relationships.Therefore,the functional equivalence theory of Eugene A.Nida is selected as the theoretical basis of the translation task,because it emphasizes that translation is not the pursuit of equivalence between the target text and the original text in literal meaning,but the transmission of the original idea and purpose.Therefore,it is of practical significance to take the functional equivalence theory as the theoretical basis of the translation task.In this report,the translator divides the complex sentences in the text into three categories.For the complex sentences with parenthesis,the translation techniques of combination and adjusting word order are adopted;for the complex sentences with parallel clauses,combination and recasting are adopted;for the complex sentences with embedded clauses,division,embedding and synthesis are adopted.The results of this report are expected to bring some reference significance to the study of complex sentences translation.
