With the rapid development of China’s economy, new achievements have been made in the field of science and technology, and the EST(English for Science and Technology)is becoming more and more important.Especially in recent years,China is not only leading the world in the field of high-speed railway construction and scale, but also making contributions to other countries by assisting them with high-speed-railway construction technology. In order to ensure our sustainable development,we have the necessity to learn from other countries, especially in the art of management. We need their advanced managing experience and technology. In view of this,we need to translate a large number of relevant English documents. From this perspective, the translation of scientific and technological texts shows its practical value more evidently.Of course,as accuracy and professionalism is highlighted in the translation of such texts and the relevant requirements in translation are higher. Therefore,it can constitute a big challenge for translators. This translation report is based on the translation of The Application of Project Management in the High-speed Railway. In the light of the Functional Equivalence theory proposed by Nida, the difficulties encountered in the translation of technical terms and long sentences are classified, analyzed and summarized, from which the following findings are generated.First of all,Functional Equivalence theory proposed by Nida who has a very positive influence on translation, but its influence,is,in a sense, indirect. It can provide the rationale for the choice of translation techniques or strategies.Secondly, for the translation of technical terms, the strategies of literal and free translation and the technique of condensation can be employed.Thirdly, for the translation of long sentences, the techniques of splitting, restructuring, inversion and converting passive voice into active voice are not only practical but also effective.Fourthly, employment of translation techniques in translation should be flexible instead of being mechanical. Finally,in order to ensure accuracy in the translation of scientific and technological texts, expertise should be accumulated;therefore, active accumulation of expertise before translation is of great necessity.Apart from Introduction and Conclusion, the report falls into four chapters. The first chapter introduces the background of the project. The second chapter is the translation process description. In Chapter Three, the main problems encountered in the translation of technical terms and long sentences are classified, analyzed and summarized,on the basis of which the corresponding solutions are probed into.Chapter Four is reflections,in which the experience and loss is listed and expounded.Suggestions for future research are also displayed in this chapter. It is sincerely hoped that the report will be of some value for the translators of similar texts and it can provide useful reference for those who are interested in the learning of translation of scientific and technological texts.
