On March 18th,2018,Asako Maruyama,an education specialist appointed by the Asian Development Bank,conducted a five-day inspection on the education technical assistance project of the Asian Development Bank in Lanzhou and its surrounding areas.Asian Development Bank required that English be the working language of the mission.Entrusted by the College of Education of Northwest Normal University,the author of this report carried out various tasks such as conference interpreting and accompanying interpretating.The duration of conference interpreting is about 27 hours,including a five-day discussion on the project plan,funds,bidding,and management units etc.The author was responsible for interpreting for both sides.This paper selects some parts of speeches from the participants characterized by redundancy,ambiguous expressions,illogical expressions,and repetition,to analyze the application of The Interpretive Theory to those problems.Some of them resulted from informal occasions.Under the Interpretive Theory,the author applied the techniques of simplification,paraphrase,combination,and logical improvement as solutions to redundancy,ambiguous expressions,illogical expressions and repetition respectively,by simplifying the unnecessary information from Chinese speakers,adding more specific information to ambiguous expressions and professional terms,improving the illogical expressions in a better English grammar and logical way,and restructuring the information of the same main idea or similar information.During the process,the author was working with employees or professionals from the field of education,public service,and the specialist from ABD.Thus,the author got the experience from the task particularly about interpreting task that serves various people from different fields and how to handle the working difficulties with them,and also gained experience in interpreting and translating tasks in the field of education technical assistance,such as the efficiency improvement by applying simplification,providing better understanding by paraphrasing,avoiding unnecessary information via restructuring the speech,and making logical improvement for the source language.Besides,the author specifically reflected his experience in this project of education assistance,such as the usage of terms,understanding the aim of education assistance,and the methods of cooperating with personnel from this field.
