A Report On E-C Translation Of The Digital Storm（Excerpts） From The Perspective Of Functional Eauivalence Theory

This is a translation practice report based on the translation of excerpts from The Digital Storm published by Fiberead,an online translation publishing platform.This piece of science fiction is an adaptation of Shakespeare ’s legendary play,The Tempest,telling about Artificial Intelligence hero Prosper who was banished to the intranet wilderness of Millennium Bank.Prosper single-handedly created a new world using the network technology,which in his hands affected the real world in turn.He seduced the culprits who banished him into the intranet and trapped them in custody.But finally,he forgave his culprits and set out to explore the outer space.This report is carried out under the guidance of Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory,aiming to explore the possibility of achieving functional equivalence in E-C translation when the text possesses features both of an ordinary literary work and that of science fiction.The translation practice report is mainly divided into five parts:the first part is the project introduction and the summary of story,which emphasizes briefly the reasons for choosing this fiction.Since requirements for literary translation and for the translation of science fiction are different,the trade-off and preference in translation are discussed in this part.The second part introduces the three stages of translation practice,namely,pre-translation preparation,in-translation activities and post-translation proofreading.This part is the result of combining Nida’s translation theory with translation practice,which makes text analysis,delivery of meanings and reader feedback run through the whole translation process.The third part explains the guiding theoretical framework of translation practice,mainly introduces Nida’s theory of functional equivalence and its guiding significance to translation practice.The fourth part,in the form of case analysis,discusses the significance and applicable translation strategies of functional equivalence theory to science fiction from the lexical,syntactic and discourse levels.The methods include literal translation and free translation,parts of speech and sentence pattern transformation.This part also tries to analyze the influence of ideology on translation from the discourse level.The fifth part makes a comprehensive summary and reflection on the translation practice.Taking the translation practice of The Digital Storm as an example,this report discusses the guiding significance of functional equivalence theory in the translation of science fiction.It also explores the translation strategies and countermeasures that can be adopted to achieve ’the most natural equivalence’in the translation.The author hopes that this translation practice report could provide a reference for other translators translating similar texts.
