Technology transfer is an important tool for transforming social science and technology resources into real economic benefits.Currently,China is facing unprecedented multiple pressures from international politics, economy and deepening reform of national science and technology innovation mechanism. The steady development of technology transfer work has also become a key part of the new national strategic goals.Research universities,as one of the main forces of science and technology resources innovation in China. The effective realization of their technology transfer performance is an important driving force for the construction of China’s technology transfer system and the promotion of national innovation development. However,at present, the technology transfer channels of research universities in China are not smooth, the technology transfer performance is not high, and the last link of successful industrialization of university scientific and technological achievements is a significant problem. Therefore,it is urgent to explore new models and paths of technology transfer that are suitable for research universities.Based on the modularization theory and technology transfer theory, this study explains the obstacles of technology transfer in the above-mentioned research universities from the perspective of organizational modularization.Based on the systematic analysis of existing research progress and gaps, the paper firstly deconstructs the concept of organizational modularity into multidimensional features(division of labor, independence and responsiveness).Second,a theoretical model of the impact of organizational modularity on technology transfer performance of research universities is developed.Among them, technology innovation capability and knowledge sharing variables are embedded as mediating and moderating variables, respectively.Based on the development of relevant scales,a multifaceted survey was conducted on a sample of 35 research universities in China, and 543 valid questionnaires were collected(with a return rate of 83.53 %.)Moreover, this study used SPSS 24.0 and AMOS software to empirically study the questionnaire data to demonstrate and test the mechanism of organizational modularity on the technology transfer performance of research universities. The findings suggest that organizational modularity provides an effective management path for building technology transfer systems in research universities. It understands and interprets the technology transfer performance enhancement problem from a new perspective.Organizational modularity(division of labor, independence, and responsiveness)has a positive and significant impact on the technology transfer performance(growth performance and financial performance)of research universities.Technological innovation capability plays a significant mediating role between organizational modularity and technology transfer performance. The moderating effect of knowledge sharing was mainly applied to the relationship between organizational modularity independence, responsiveness and technological innovation capability, and had no significant effect on the relationship between organizational modularity division of labor and technological innovation capability.Based on the above findings, this study draws the following important conclusions:(1)Research universities should shift their technology market perspective;(2)Establish a professional and independent technology transfer system;(3)Focus on cultivating innovative talents for professional technology transfer services;(4)Focus on cultivating research technology innovation capability;(5)Create an intelligent project service platform;(6)Focus on the performance measurement of technology transfer projects at both levels of growth performance and financial performance.
