Indonesian students are belongs to “the non-Chinese character circle”,with their daily language composed of alphabetic letters. Therefore, the lack of familiarity causes Indonesian students to frequently make mistakes when writing Chinese characters. This research was conducted in Semarang Indonesia. The author has selected a local high school that is representative of the whole Chinese-learning population in Indonesia.Although the high school was founded by a Chinese and has made Chinese teaching a heritage of the school for years, since the school was open to non-Chinese students as well from long ago,the percentage of non-Chinese student of the school is in a leading position across all Chinese high schools in Semarang. The author first collected the Chinese dictation notebook from more than two hundred students of the school, and distributed the questionnaire to students,to collect research materials. Then the author analyzed clerical errors presented in the dictation notebook and categorized students’ clerical errors into typos, other characters and noncharacters. At the same time, the author further analyzed on the reasons why students make clerical errors and divided the results into two categories: internal and external. On this basis, the author investigated the teaching situation of the Chinese class, and found that the teaching methods used in the classroom act as the most important factor that affects the Chinese character learning of the students, and the same factor still has huge room for improvements. Therefore, the author tried to conduct a comparative experiment on the teaching methods used in the Chinese classroom by randomly selecting two classes from the same grade. The author gave one of the classes selected a three-month Chinese teaching, combining multiple teaching methods and the use of multimedia in classroom;while the other class was taught in the same way as it was before. The author then compared the teaching results of the control group and the experimental group by using students’ Chinese exam scores from the past three months as the criteria. The results of the comparison show that a variety of teaching methods will directly affect the students’ performance in learning Chinese characters.
