Recently,digitalization and information technology are in a period of rapid development,with many new technologies being introduced into the construction field to enhance the overall quality and efficiency of the industry.In particular,BIM(Building Information Modeling)technology is the most important element in the field of construction informatization.Promoting and applying BIM technology has thoroughly changed the design,production and management mode of the traditional construction industry,which makes it possible to comprehensively improve the productivity and efficiency of the construction industry.Nevertheless,in recent years,despite the support of encouragement policies at the national level and industry level,as well as the gradual application of BIM technology in the construction industry,the mechanism of BIM technology adoption by construction enterprises and the key influencing factors of BIM technology adoption by enterprises are still unclear.Against the above research background and around the main lines of existing research,this paper proposes a comprehensive model of IT adoption based on innovation theory from both theoretical and empirical perspectives in order to explore the influencing factors of IT adoption and then elucidate the impact of BIM technology adoption on firm performance.First,in terms of the theoretical framework,the common theories of technology adoption research are reviewed,and the grounded theory is adapted to the specificity of this study’s perspective and research questions.The TOE-E framework is proposed by expanding on the traditional TOE framework(technology-organizationenvironment framework)and adding an economic dimension.Within the TOE-E framework,a total of 11 BIM adoption influencing factors(relative advantage,compatibility,complexity,top management support,organizational readiness,organizational culture,government pressure,customer pressure,and competitor pressure)are identified by integrating innovation diffusion theory and systematic literature review,and a comprehensive model of BIM IT adoption is constructed.Then,based on the comprehensive adoption model,several research hypotheses are proposed under the four dimensions of technology,organization,environment,and economy.The research model in this paper highlights the influence of economic factors on technology adoption,which improves the research model’s ability to explain the BIM technology adoption behavior of Chinese construction enterprises.Second,for the empirical study,based on the questionnaire survey data of Chinese construction enterprises,a structural equation-artificial neural network(SEM-ANN)hybrid approach was used,and importance performance map analysis(IPMA)was used as an additional analysis in SEM to conduct hypothesis testing and comparative analysis of the integrated model of BIM information technology adoption,and key influencing factors were importance ranking.This paper provides a detailed analysis of the key factors affecting the adoption of BIM technology in China’s construction enterprises and their influence mechanisms.The results of the study indicate that organizational readiness,return on investment,senior management support,customer pressure,complexity,and relative advantage have a decisive and increasing impact on the adoption of BIM technologies.bim adoption has a positive impact on business performance.In addition,IPMA provides performance indicators for each construct,which are analyzed in combination with the relative importance derived from SEM,and thus prioritize management actions.the results indicate that return on investment,customer pressure,and organizational readiness have higher importance,but lower performance and require special attention in terms of resource allocation.Finally,the results of the empirical study are discussed,and the results of hypothesis testing,IPMA and the importance ranking of the influencing factors are analyzed in turn with the existing literature,and rationalized suggestions for the adoption and promotion of BIM technology are given.The contributions of this paper are reflected as follows:the study increased the practice of a specific technology adoption in the construction field,broadened the knowledge of researchers on technology adoption issues in the construction engineering field,and provided the researchers,managers,and policy makers facing BIM technology adoption issues with valuable insights.Identifying the key influencing factors of BIM technology adoption in building construction enterprises is significant,which is helpful to improve the adoption of BIM technology and to push forward the informationization process in the construction industry.
