| The author is an international student from Vietnam who has been learning Chinese for nearly ten years.During the study,the author discovered that the use of bidirectional compound complement in the Chinese language and its meaning,especially “qilai”,is challenging for Chinese language learners.This thesis,however,focuses on the case of Vietnamese learners only.Most Vietnamese learners are found to frequently commit this mistake while using Chinese.Therefore,this thesis was conducted to investigate this phenomenon using data surveyed from Vietnamese learners studying the Chinese language at intermediate and advanced levels.Reasoning error analysis and comparative analysis were used on a Chinese language database to categorize errors and discover possible causes,thereby providing Chinese language teachers(in Vietnam as well as other countries)with valuable sources of references for teaching activities.This thesis was divided into five chapters.Chapter One discusses the research motivations,methodologies,and literature review.Chapter Two gives general perspectives on the meaning of “qilai”,and compares the use of “qilai” in Chinese and Vietnamese languages to provide strong foundations for error categorization and discovery of causes.Chapter Three presents the results of analyses of the Chinese language database and surveyed data.The two other chapters mainly focus on four types of errors,including wrong meaning,wrong syntax,avoidance of using “qilai”,and miscellaneous.Based on obtained results,major reasons leading to these errors are revealed.Also,practical recommendations are proposed to help Chinese language learners and Chinese language teachers to restrict these errors. |
