Abstract/Summary:
The selected text of this translation practice report is 3-4 chapters of Numbers Don’t Lie.In the two chapters of the book, the author uses a large number of persuasive figures to present the development and achievements of science and technology in various fields in modern America to the readers. The source text belongs popular science texts with regard to its contents,so it features strong function and purpose. Therefore, this report is based on the three principles of Skopos theory and uses appropriate translation methods comprehensively: As to the lack of background information, the ambiguity of context and the obscurity of proper nouns that cause reading difficulties, the translator adopts amplification and annotation to promote the target language readers’ understanding of the source text;the translator uses translation methods such as conversion, division and combination to ensure the smoothness and fluency of the translated text in view of the words and long and difficult sentences in the source text that do not conform to the Chinese expression habits;to solve the problem of how to achieve effective consistency between the translated text and the original text in terms of information contents and linguistic style, the translator employs extended meaning of words and four-character structures so that the translated text,to a large extent,is not only faithful to the original text information, but also achieves the effect and purpose of consistency with the linguistic style of the original to a certain degree.Through this translation practice, the translator believes that the three principles of Skopos Theory have practical guiding role on the translation of popular science works.Under the guidance of this theory, not only can the quality of the translation be effectively improved, but the style of the translation can also be faithful to the original text to the greatest extent. It is hoped that the translation methods summarized in this translation practice can bring some inspiration to the translation of other same type of texts.
