At present, the world is facing a century of change, new international patterns, new modernization models, new industrial revolutions, new global issues, and global governance are emerging one after another. The main reasons for the change in the world structure are the rise of China and the relative decline of the West. Therefore, amid a century of changes, the relations between China and the United States is particularly important. This report is a practice report based on the consecutive interpreting simulation of the lecture entitled “A Century of Change and China-US Relations”.This was a lecture delivered by Professor Jin Canrong of the School of International Relations of Renmin University of China on September 26,2020,at the View Institute. This lecture featured abundant political and economic terms,as well as some indistinguishable accents. However, because Professor Jin’s lecture style is humorous and explicit, and the examples given are generally easy to understand,it also brings a lot of convenience to the author. This practice of consecutive interpreting was completed under the guidance of the Interpretive Theory.Interpretive Theory was put forward by Danica Seleskovic and Mariana Lederay. The core idea of Interpretive Theory is that what the interpreter should pursue is not the equivalence of language units, but the original meaning of the source language.During the past decades, many scholars home and abroad have conducted theoretical studies based upon the Interpretive Theory. Also, the author does in-depth research regarding integrating the Interpretive Theory with practice in her study.By summarizing and analyzing, the difficulties encountered in this interpretation practice can be divided into three categories. After classification, the author outlined the suggested solutions for each difficulty separately.Three types of difficulties are related to the differences between Chinese and English and the characteristics of lectures, namely, redundant source language information, mixed sentence structure, and disfluency in the interpretation output. After that, the author adopts Seleskovic’s Interpretive Theory, compares various interpretation methods, revises the plans, and lists the best ones. Finally, the following corresponding methods are obtained: the technique for repetition of information is omission;the technique for mixed sentence structure is to reorganize the sentence structure;the technique for disfluency is to interpret through understanding and to deverbalize from the language shell.By summarizing the role of Interpretive Theory in guiding this interpretation practice and accumulating relevant experience, the author hopes to improve her interpretation practice in the future.
