The thesis is a C-E translation report of an excerpt from A Brief History of Chinese and Western Translation written by a Chinese scholar Xie Tianzhen.According to the equivalence principle put forward by Werner Koller, the translator not only analyses some translation difficulties in terms of achieving equivalence at lexical, syntactic and textual levels, but also puts forward some translation methods to tackle those problems encountered. To achieve the equivalence, she analyzes the original text based on the lexical, syntactic and textual level. To achieve the connotative and denotative equivalence, the translator takes full advantage of term databases and parallel texts to ensure accurate and consistent translation of book title,four-character structures and proper nouns in the original text,so as to meet equivalence requirements. To meet the pragmatic equivalence, the non-subject sentences in the original text are supplied with subjects or shifted from active to passive voice,so as to meet the practice of the target language. In addition, long and complex sentences are translated by splitting and reconstructing. To achieve the formal equivalence, cohesion and coherence are achieved from different aspects of translation. This paper consists of five chapters: introduction, task description, translation process, case analysis and conclusion.Introduction and task description can lay a solid foundation for the translation.Case analysis is the key part to represent how to tackle those translation obstacles encountered and the conclusion helps her and other translators to complete the similar translation material in the future.
