A Report On The E-C Translation Of First Magic(Excerpts)

This is a report based on an English-Chinese translation of the magic novel First Magic.This material is excerpted from the preface to Chapter 3 of the source text.First Magic is a novel written by American novelist,Raven Steele,in 2020.From Newmark’s text typology,the source text,which is a popular novel,belongs to the vocative text.Therefore,the translator should be reader centered and resonate with the readers.This translation practice report combines text typology,conducts translation research through case analysis from three aspects: lexical level,syntactic level,and textual level,and summarizes the main strategies and specific methods for translating magic novels,which mainly concludes a translation strategy that combines semantic translation and communicative translation.At the lexical level,it discusses the translation of endocentric phrases,verbs,adjectives,and slan g,mainly including translation methods such as transformation,extension of meaning and so on.At the syntactic level,it discusses the translation of simple sentences and long sentences,mainly including translation methods such as revision of word order and annotation.At the textual level,the differences between English and Chinese languages are mainly discussed and analyzed.Through the two translation methods,free translation and literal translation,specific translation methods are analyzed,including revision of word order,revision,annotation and so on.Through this translation practice,the author believes that communicative translation and semantic translation play an important guiding role in the translation of magic novels.But this two translation strategies do not exist independently or mutually exclusive,but complement each other.In future translation study,the author will collect more background and parallel texts related to magic words,and apply other translation theories to translation practice.The author hopes that this translation report can provide certain reference significance for the translation of magic words in the future.
