| The interaction between urban and rural regions is a vital aspect of social ties, and the growth of urban and rural areas is linked to our society’s harmony and stability. The urbanization development process in China started relatively late compared to developed countries.Initially, due to factors such as the pursuit of economies of scale and historical policies that favor heavy industry development, the overall quality of urban and rural development was not high.In recent years,China has gradually improved the living conditions of urban and rural residents, promoted agricultural modernization and rural economic development, and raised people’s living standards by promoting urbanization and implementing the rural revitalisation strategy, but there are still unresolved issues of unbalanced and inadequate urban and rural development in China. The Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council published Views on Building a Good Institutional Mechanism and Policy Framework for the Integrated Development of Urban and Rural Regions in 2019.The report of the 20 th Party Congress in October 2022 emphasized that "efforts should be made to foster urban-rural convergence and coordinated regional development." In this setting, how to deal with the interaction between urban and rural regions in China in the new era, minimize the gap between urban and rural areas, and promote the integrated development in China has become a pressing practical issue that must be addressed. This paper, guided by Marx and Engels’ theory of urban-rural relations, first excavates and analyzes the ideas of urban-rural relations in Marx and Engels’ classic works, using the method of documentary research and the unification of history and logic, secondly uses the method of combining theory and practice to analyse the achievements and problems that still exist in the integrated development of urban and rural areas in China, and finally, based on Marx and Engels’ theory of urban-rural relations,it proposes corresponding countermeasures to promote the integrated development in China. Finally,we propose corresponding countermeasures to promote the development of urban-rural integration in China based on Marx and Engels’ theory of urban-rural relations. The thesis is mainly elaborated in four parts: the first section is the introduction, which clarifies the study’s background and significance, summarizes research progress at home and abroad, and explains the research method, research ideas, and points of innovation in this thesis. The second part investigates the main contents of Marx and Engels’ theory of urban-rural relations, focusing on the evolutionary stages of urban-rural relations in Marx and Engels’ discourse, the causes of urban-rural separation and confrontation, and the consequences,as well as elaborating on the main connotations of urban-rural integration, the inevitability of its realization, and the main methods. The third part examines the development of urban-rural integration in China.Firstly,it analyses the evolution of urban-rural relations in China, secondly,it summarises the achievements of urban-rural integration in China, and finally,it analyses the problems that still exist in the development of urban-rural integration and their causes. The fourth section proposes strategies to promote the integrated development of urban and rural areas in China from the perspectives of urban-rural industrial development,urban-rural factor flow,urban-rural public services, and urban-rural cultural construction, guided by Marx and Engels’ theory of urban-rural relations. |
