Sustainable development is not only an important proposition and challenge for world development,but also a social responsibility and historical mission that universities should undertake.In 2021,China issued the "China’s National Voluntary Report on the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development",which put forward the prospect of fully implementing the 2030 Agenda and promoting the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.However,under the intertwined pressure of the epidemic in the century and the changes of the century,the task of realizing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals has become increasingly urgent.UNESCO believes that universities are at the core of the transformation of education to promote sustainable social development.Universities should fully assume social responsibilities,lead social development,participate in sustainable development actions,and promote the implementation of sustainable development goals.However,from the current point of view,some universities may have the will,but they have not really taken action at the organizational level;some universities have taken action,but the practice system for participating in the SDG action has not yet been perfected.Therefore,it is necessary to turn the research perspective to the driving factors of universities’ participation in the SDGs,focus on the effective experience of universities’ participation in the SDGs,improve the sustainable development capabilities of Chinese universities,and give better play to Chinese universities’ commitment to the SDGs.key support.Based on the theory of sustainable transformation and organizational change,this research adopts the method of case analysis,qualitative analysis and comparative analysis.The domestic and foreign literatures related to the sustainable development of universities,and then based on the text data of the case universities,with the help of Nvivo11.0 software,the driving factors of universities’ participation in the SDGs actions are summarized step by step,and the relationship between the factors is analyzed,and the university participation can be constructed.A driving model for SDG action.Finally,it focuses on the practical activities of universities participating in SDG actions,extracts the elements of universities participating in SDG actions,and further explores the mechanism of universities participating in SDG actions,so as to provide reference for driving universities to participate in SDG actions.The empirical results of this study show that among the factors that drive universities to participate in the SDGs,the cultivation of the university’s own willingness to participate in the SDGs is the premise.It is an intermediary,and the improvement of the ability to participate in the SDG action is the ultimate goal,and participating in the creation of the SDG action environment is the driving force behind the university’s participation in the SDG action process.In the process of participating in the SDGs,universities not only need to integrate the concept of sustainable development into the daily process of running schools,but also need to closely integrate their own advantages with the SDGs.In addition,there must also be systematic support from the internal governance structure of the university.Based on the empirical results,this study puts forward the following suggestions to drive Chinese universities to participate in the SDGs: implement sustainable strategy integration and cultivate the willingness of universities to participate in the SDGs;focus on sustainable core activities and explore the practice of universities participating in the SDGs,promote the sustainable transformation of universities by improving the sustainable development education system,innovating sustainable development research,and establishing a wider sustainable cooperation network;improving the sustainable governance structure and enhancing the university’s ability to participate in the sustainable development goals;attaching importance to sustainable development spread ideas and create an environment for universities to participate in SDGs action.
